Why is Pioglitazone (Actos) prescribed?
Actos is used, in combination or alone with other medicines, to treat diabetes type 2 (when diabetes cannot be controlled by exercise and diet alone. Class of drugs: thiazolidinediones. Special precautions
Before taking Actos,
tell your physician and pharmacist what prescription and OTC drugs you are taking, especially oral contraceptives, ketoconazole (Nizoral), other medications for diabetes type 2, herbal products and vitamins, troglitazone (Rezulin).
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart failure, liver disease (including cirrhosis and hepatitis), swollen ankles or feet (edema), high cholesterol, or a history of alcohol abuse.
tell your healthcare professional if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking Actos, call your doctor immediately.
tell your pharmacist and doctor if you are allergic to rosiglitazone, pioglitazone, troglitazone, or any other medications.
Actos can restart ovulation in women with polycystic ovary disease or those taking oral contraceptives. There is a risk for pregnancy if adequate birth control is not used. If you are taking birth control drugs, your physician may choose to adjust your dose. You should discuss a reliable form of birth control with your healthcare specialist.
Special dietary instructions
Pioglitazone (Actos) should be taken every day with the same meals. Be sure to follow all dietary recommendations and exercise made by your dietitian or doctor. Missing a dose?
Take the missed dose of pioglitazone as soon as your remember it. But if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed pioglitazone dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double pioglitazone dose to make up for a missed one.
Pioglitazone side effects
This medicine may cause changes in patient's blood sugar. You should know the symptoms of high and low blood sugar and what to do if you have them.
You may experience low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) while you are taking pioglitazone in combination with other medications used to treat diabetes. Your healthcare specialist will tell you what you should do if you develop low blood sugar. The doctor may tell you to check your blood sugar, drink or eat a food or beverage containing sugar, such as fruit juice or hard candy, or get medical care. Follow these instructions carefully if you have any of the following symptoms of low blood sugar:
sweating
lightheadedness or dizziness
irritability or nervousness
shakiness
headache
clumsy or jerky movements
sudden changes in behavior or mood
weakness
numbness or tingling around the mouth
pale skin
hunger
If low blood sugar is not treated, severe symptoms may develop. Be sure that your friends, family, and other closed people who spend time with you know that if you have any of the following features, they should get medical treatment for you immediately.

confusion
Call your physician immediately if you have any of the following symptoms of hyperglycemia:
frequent urination
weakness
blurred vision
extreme thirst
extreme hunger
If high blood sugar is not treated, life-threatening condition: diabetic ketoacidosis could develop. Call your physician immediately if you have any of the these symptoms:
shortness of breath

decreased consciousness
upset stomach and vomiting
breath that smells fruity

Keep this Pioglitazone (Actos) in the container it came in, out of reach of children and tightly closed. Store pioglitazone at room temperature and away from moisture and excess heat. Other Pioglitazone (Actos) information
Keep all appointments with your healthcare professional and the laboratory. Your glycosolated hemoglobin and blood sugar should be checked regularly to determine your response to pioglitazone (Actos).
Rare cases of liver failure and injury have occurred during therapy with drug similar to pioglitazone. The potential risk of liver injury with this medication is not known at this time. It is important that you keep all directions with the laboratory and your doctor. Your physician will order certain laboratory tests before and during your treatment time to check your response to the medication. You will have these tests before you begin to take Actos, and then every 2 months for the first year of pioglitazone therapy. These tests will be done less frequently after the first year.
